It was a hairy time in Movember!

You may have noticed rather a lot of ‘taches’ appearing on male faces all over the country during November. It was all to do with ‘Movember’, when men are asked to grow a moustache and get sponsorship for doing so. The money raised benefits Prostate Cancer Research.

That charity has been chosen for his year by Neville Custance, our 2011/2012 Captain. So, a group of Verulam members (pictured right with Neville) left their top lips unshaven for the 30 days of November and raised a tidy sum in the process.

The ‘Demon Barber of Verulam’, Billy Austin, was called in to perform a mass shave-off on December 1st (pictures below). Steve Craig, who just turned up to witness the shave-off, lost his whiskers too – and James Dunne took the opportunity for an eyebrow trim! Mike Kemp’s wife Val was so keen for his ‘tache’ to be history that she applied the shavingsoap!

Rosemary sets sail!

Rosemary Stephenson is our new Ladies’ Captain and it was her Drive-in on 16th November. In addition to golf, Rosemary is a keen sailor. So, our lady members dressed suitably (in some instances it appeared with a French flavour) to welcome her to the tee. In addition to the new Ladies’ Captain, it is traditional for the outgoing Ladies’ Captain (Ann Havard) and new Ladies’ Vice-Captain (Maureen Roe) to strike a ball and we are pleased to report that all three hit long and straight! Good luck and have fun in your year Rosemary.

Our Presentation Night took place on Saturday 22nd October. Captain Bryan Peirson presented the trophies to the worthy 2011 winners. Below are photographs from the evening in ‘trophy name alphabetical order’. Hearty congratulations to all the winning Ladies, Juniors and Men!

Our new Captain Drives-in!

Sunday 6th November 2011 was the date; Neville Custance was the man; our new Captain’s Drive-in was the event…

A guard of honour formed by members of our new Captain’s Saturday Swindle and knocked into shape by Corporal Billy Austin – plus the melodic tones of saxophonist and friend Paul Brookes – ushered our 2011/2012 Captain, Neville Custance, to the tee for his Drive-in. This traditional event at the start of the Captain’s year saw him strike three drives from the first tee using one of legendary Abe Mitchell’s hickory shafted woods. Each strike was followed by a glass of purely-medicinal nectar.

Members will be pleased to hear that Neville performed! Three mighty blows will have placed dread in the hearts of all Captain/Pro challengers for the coming year! Heaving a hefty sigh of relief, Neville returned to the Clubhouse for lunch with his guests. And a highly successful lunch it was with the sincere wish from all: good luck for your year Captain Neville!

It was a Halloween of a party!

More than 70 members and guests partied into the small hours at the Club on Saturday 29th October. It was a double celebration to mark Halloween and, more importantly, a highly successful year for our outgoing Captain Bryan Peirson. As you will see from the pictures below, there were some fantastic fancy dressers on parade which all added to the atmosphere. A fine meal including pumpkin soup and ghoulash was washed down with large amounts of various colours of nectar. The meal was followed by live music from the Beagles which appeared to go down as well as the food! An excellent time was had by all. Well done Bryan and thank you for a great year!

Roll-ups/Swindles open to all members

Verulam has a number of roll-ups/swindles (see list below) which are open to all members. These are a great way to meet other members and enjoy some friendly competition. No pre-booking is required, it’s just a case of turn up and play!

Roll-ups & Swindles open to all members at Verulam -
TATS (Tuesday And Thursday Swindle): Meet by 8.15am for tee off from 8.30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays
Winter Eleven Hole Stableford: Meet by 12.45pm for tee off from 1pm on Wednesdays (end September to mid April)
Captain’s Saturday Roll-up: Meet by 8am for tee off between 8am and 8.30am on Saturdays when there is no Club Competition

Tommy Ashton wins Verulam Junior Open

71 junior golfers from 31 golf clubs competed in the 2011 Verulam Junior Open at the Home of the Ryder Cup.
Weather conditions were favourable however the course proved challenging. Despite this the CSS remained at 72 (73 for the girls).

George wins again!

Saturday 24th September
George Archer made it a month to remember as he added the Oliver Trophy to his victories in the Hadley Wood Junior Open, the Parent-Junior Cup and the September Junior Stableford. George’s nett 68 was the stand-out round on the day.

Molly Doyle’s consistency was also rewarded as she picked her third Junior Medal in a row.

Anthony Walter retains the lead from Matt Lye and Tom Li in the Aslett Trophy for the Junior with the best hole by hole medal score for 2011.

Sunday 18th September

George Archer followed up his win in the Parent-Junior scoring 40 points to win the September Junior Stableford. Callum Walker edged Sam Donald on countback for 2nd after they both scored 37 points (same score last 9, 6, 3 and 2 holes!).

Anthony Walter moved 3 clear of Matt Lye in the Day Trophy for the Junior with the best hole by hole stableford score for 2011.

Under-11s, 11-hole Stableford

Four boys competed in the new under-11s event. Each played from the Blue Tees off a handicap of 36 and the result was very close. Kiran Malik won by 1 point from Finn Stephens thanks in part to a fabulous 3 nett 1 for 5 points on the 3rd hole!
