Two Verulam members become Herts Rules Officials

Look closely at this picture from the Herts Golf Union AGM in February and you will spot two familiar Verulam faces. Dr Alan Thomson and Steve Fownes came 1st and 2nd in the rules of golf exam they sat in December 2009 (we are not sure who was 1st and 2nd though!). Alan and Steve received their Badges and Certificates at the AGM and are now bona fide HGU Rules Officials to whom Club members, the Secretary and the Club Professional can turn for assistance in interpreting the Rules of Golf. As new County officials, they are eligible to referee in county events. So, very well done Alan and Steve. This link will take you to the full story on the HGU website:

Saturday Morning ‘Roll-Up’

Our ‘Roll-Up and Play’ on Saturday mornings is back in action after the bad weather. The first tee is booked from 8am to 8.30am for members to make up and play as they arrive. In other words, no booked games. This is an important way for members to mix and meet new friends. In particular, new members will find this arrangement beneficial. Importantly, all those turning up are guaranteed a game as the activity is overseen to create 3 or 4 ball groups as appropriate.
(’Roll-Up and Play’ does not apply on Saturdays when there is a Club competition.)

Our next Quiz Night (11/3/10)

The date for our next Quiz Night is Thursday 11th March. Come along for a fun evening to test your brain (not too seriously). A snack meal is included. Add your name(s) to the list in the foyer. You don’t need to have a team as individuals can add their names to the list and we will allocate you to a team.

Old Course Fourball Stableford

This competition was played on the 2 January 2010 and the early morning conditions made it difficult to stop a golf ball. The afternoon players had more favourable conditions although it was still very firm.

Result
H Boycott Brown & S Wilson = 41 points (after card play off)
T Fabian & P Keen = 41 points (after card play 0ff)
G Eastwood & C Guilbert = 41 points

Another interesting point from this event which had 37 pairs taking part was that there were only 2 Two’s.

New Year’s Eve Party pictures

A fine time was had by all at our New Year’s Eve Party. A silver-service meal, dancing, spot prizes and fun party games proved a highly successful formula as these pictures amply demonstrate. As you will see, a number of Past Captains demonstrated significant skills not related to their golfing prowess!

TATS Christmas Bash

Our TATS (Tuesday And Thursday Swindle) held their annual Christmas bash on Tuesday 15th December. The TATS are, allegedly, Verulam’s largest ‘roll up & make up group’. The ‘formula’ is meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays @ 8am, then draw cards for partners and tee off from 8.30am. All are welcome (as with Verulam’s other Swindles).

Over 50 TATS competed for the Christmas Trophy and the winner by a large margin was Bob Veal with 44 points! Brunch followed the golf with wine very generously supplied by the Captain, Norman Smith (cheers Norm).
